The Gallery at 41 is hosting a free exhibition this week (11th – 15th July 2012) of watercolours of Purbeck by William Wiehe Collins, a noted watercolourist of the late 19C and early 20C. W W Collins lived opposite the gallery for a time before settling in Stoborough.
The intriguing Olympic connection is that his son Commander Bill Collins organised the 1948 Olympic Torch relay across Europe. Cdr Collins who was borne in Corfe Castle, overcame the enormous organisational challenges of the post War aftermath to create a highly successful event.
Corfe Castle welcomes the 2012 Torch this Friday.
